Psychological and Functional Assessment of Obese and Overweight Women Rehabilitated with an Aquatic Program

Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease affecting insulin sensibility, lipids metabolism, blood pressure, coagulation, fibrinolysis and inflammation. It is considered a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, gastrointestinal, psychological, neoplastic and dermatological diseases. It is classified as the XXIst Century epidemic and the fifth cause of death worldwide. This research is aimed at an aquatic-physical program to treat overweight and obese patients attending health institutions from Río Verde Neighborhood, in Boyeros, Havana. Along this work were used different theoretical and empirical methods such as: the historico - logical, induction - deduction, analysis-synthesis, interview - survey and statistical-mathematical. Corona is how the aforementioned program is called. It has general and specific objectives, two stages, duration, week frequency, work intensity, dosage and an amount of 56 exercises as essential components. Among the characteristics of the patients studied, 19 were obese type I, eight type II, and two type III; other related diseases like diabetes mellitus, blood pressure as well as bronchial asthma were also identified. After applying such program, patients not only lost some weight, but also the skin fold, the waistline size, the fat percentage, and adiposity with significant differences.
